The iPhone 18e could get a shiny new chip while Apple keeps rationing smooth scrolling

Digital Chat Station tips a 2nm A20 processor and another 60Hz display for Apple's cheaper iPhone

Apple’s next cheaper iPhone could get a brand-new processor while keeping its most stubborn display compromise. Digital Chat Station tips the iPhone 18e for a 2027 release with a 2nm A20 chip and a 6.12-inch OLED screen still limited to 60Hz.

The rumored camera setup includes a single 48MP rear camera and a possible 24MP selfie camera. There’s new hardware to consider, but buyers hoping Apple would extend that upgrade generosity to smoother scrolling could be disappointed.

Why the screen feels stingy

A 60Hz screen refreshes up to 60 times per second. A 120Hz panel can double that, making scrolling and supported animations look smoother. You can notice the difference while browsing a feed, without running anything demanding enough to trouble a modern processor.

The rumored iPhone 18e would still hit that 60Hz ceiling regardless of how much processing power the A20 has to spare. Buying newer silicon wouldn’t buy smoother scrolling beyond the panel’s limit.

What else could get an upgrade

The A20 is tipped to use a 2nm manufacturing process, although that detail alone doesn’t tell buyers how much faster the phone would run or how long its battery would last. Those gains would need to show up in testing.

The possible 24MP front camera is another upgrade to watch. Support for features such as Center Stage remains unconfirmed, so the resolution shouldn’t be treated as a promise of the same camera experience as a more expensive iPhone.

Around the back, a single 48MP camera would leave buyers without a separate ultrawide for wider shots. Megapixel counts alone won’t settle image quality for either camera.

When should buyers expect it

Digital Chat Station puts the launch in 2027, without specifying a month. The specifications remain unconfirmed, and there’s no firm price to judge the package against.

If you’re weighing an upgrade, try scrolling on 60Hz and 120Hz phones side by side. Decide how much that difference bothers you before letting the newer chip make the buying decision.

Smartphone-connected drinking water safety sensor Featured

What if checking your drinking water for dangerous chemicals were as simple as plugging a tiny gadget into your smartphone? Researchers in Japan have developed a compact sensor that could make that possible, potentially bringing sophisticated water contamination testing out of expensive laboratories and into people's hands.

Scientists at the Okinawa Institute of Science and Technology (OIST) have created a portable device capable of detecting extremely low concentrations of PFAS, commonly known as "forever chemicals." The findings were published in the journal Biosensors and Bioelectronics, which demonstrate how an inexpensive sensor and a smartphone could make identifying potentially harmful chemicals in water a lot easier.

Samsung might have a Galaxy Z Fold 9 for everyone, and I’m losing count
Samsung's 2027 foldable lineup is getting packed
Electronics, Speaker, Mobile Phone

Samsung's foldable lineup could be getting pretty crowded next year. We're already expecting successors to the Galaxy Z Fold 8, Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra, and the Galaxy Z Flip 8, while fresh leaks hint that several more devices could be in the pipeline.

The expanded lineup might include a bigger fold, a potentially cheaper alternative, and even something that slides rather than folds. According to a new leak, Samsung is currently testing two different versions of an additional wide-format Galaxy Z Fold 9. That's not all, Samsung's foldable plans could feature a grand total of six models, which is kind of in line with earlier reports.
