There are a whole bunch of action cameras out there, but most of them are made with skateboarders, downhill skiers, and paragliders in mind. HTC’s Re is everyman’s action cam. It’s got a funky design, is easy to use, and takes decent photos and videos. The camera is even water resistant enough to take into the swimming pool.
The Re sports an ultra-wide-angle, f/2.8 lens that can capture a 146-degree view of your surroundings, or a more normal view, if you’re not into the fish-eye look. It’s got a 16-megapixel 1/2.3-inch CMOS sensor, and can record video in 1080p or 720p at 30 frames per second (fps). Re even has a slow-motion mode, which records at 720p/30fps, and a timelapse mode. All of your videos and photos are stored on the included 8GB MicroSD card inside the camera.
To turn the camera on, you simply grasp it in your hand, and taking photos is easy, thanks to the single, large button of the top of the periscope-shaped camera. Re has no viewfinder, so you won’t see what you’re snapping or recording, unless you check out the feed on your phone, but HTC says that’s intentional. Re is supposed to keep you in the moment and prevent you from being sucked into your smartphone.
Our photography editor was impressed with Re’s capabilities, but thought its $200 price tag was too steep for what it offers. Luckily, price isn’t an object here, as we’re giving one away to a lucky, DT reader! Learn how to enter below:
