Better late than never: Flickr iOS app update adds live filters, free premium camera tools

Remember Flickr? Those who still have it installed in their iPhones may want to give it a light dusting because Yahoo has finally done something to give the service an extra edge over Instagram: Live filters.

In addition to a terabyte of free space Yahoo offered back when it announced the new Flickr in May, the new update to the iOS app comes packed with new features to delight everyone from amateur to professional photographers. Live filters are the most significant, because it’s something Instagram users have long desired but have yet to receive. With this preview feature, users can apply the filter before they take the picture so they know exactly how to frame the photo and get it to look as close to an original Polaroid as possible. If the preset filters aren’t doing the job, users can also adjust their own levels until the photo looks just artsy enough for the Internet.

Additionally, new camera tools such as grids, pinch-to-zoom, focus lock, and exposure point managers are now all part of Flickr’s camera tools. Premium tools like enhance, crop, sharpen, adjust color, use levels, and add vignettes also come free. These are the capabilities you’d find in paid apps like Camera+, so it’s a good incentive for those who haven’t picked sides to go with an app that gives it all away at no cost. The one thing Flickr missed, however, is the auto-straightening feature Instagram just launched yesterday. The timing is a bit of a shame, considering the promise the service has for photo pros who know what they’re doing with image editing and adjustments.

The added features are likely a result of Yahoo’s June acquisition of Ghostbird, an iOS photography software creator. We’re thankful Yahoo’s finally doing something with the many companies it bought over the past few months, even if the update seems behind in comparison to its competitors. Despite Instagram and Twitter going in the GIF-y route with Vine and Video for Instagram, is it better late than never for Yahoo? You’d think that being this far behind would mandate equal update love for both iOS and Android … but at least droid users still have Instagram.

The Flickr iOS update is available now.

Filter-free and fun, the Fujifilm Instax Mini 11 Instant Camera is on sale Right Now for Prime Day
fujifilm instax mini 11 camera prime big deal days

It's 2024, and you’re considering a point-and-shoot camera. Zero judgment here. I miss the good ol’ days of flipping through actual photo albums instead of doom-scrolling on Instagram. You can get back to those days by snagging a (in the ice white color), and it’s the perfect time because it’s on sale. Get it for 24% off during Amazon’s Prime Big Deal Days, but hurry while inventory is going strong.
There’s something magical about having a physical photo right in your hand seconds after snapping the shot, and it adds a fun, retro vibe to moments you want to capture and keep. Plus, having an actual picture to hold and display can be so much more satisfying than just another digital file on your phone. I picked one up two years ago for my eight-year-old daughter, and it’s been an instant hit in our household. And now, at its $59 sale price, I'm definitely going to be stocking up on a few to gift ahead of the holiday season.

How the Fujifilm Instax Mini 11 works
The delightful throwback comes with a FUJINON 60mm lens and an automatic exposure feature that adjusts the shutter speed for the best shot, even in low light. While the picture quality won’t be as crisp as what your smartphone can capture, it’ll still produce a quality image worthy of slapping on a refrigerator.
If selfies are your thing, this camera has a dedicated Selfie Mode (with a mirror). We set up a DIY photo booth for my daughter's birthday party with sticker frames so each kid could go home with a photo souvenir, and it was a total hit.
You can opt to make it a set with a range of accessories to buy separately, like a carrying case, a handy strap, those sticker borders I mentioned, and photo albums to hold the memories.
