Discord is trying to push more visibility on the internet for some of its biggest communities, and there’s a good chance your messages could end up in a Google Search. The platform is preparing to make conversations from certain public servers searchable on the web, so there’s a privacy setting you might want to check before the rollout begins.

According to Discord’s official announcement, the changes will roll out in two stages. Starting November 16, qualifying servers will have public web pages featuring automated summaries of conversations. By mid-December, individual messages from eligible public channels could also appear word-for-word in Google and other search engines.

Not every Discord conversation is going public

In most regions, this feature will be enabled by default for eligible adult accounts. The change specifically targets Discoverable Servers, which are public communities with at least 1,000 members that have existed for eight weeks or more. The company reveals that there are currently over 63,000 such servers.

Fortunately, private servers, restricted channels, direct messages, and group DMs are excluded. Messages sent before the December rollout also won’t be published, while usernames and avatars will remain hidden from publicly displayed messages.

It’s not hard to see why Discord is making this push. the plan is to make useful information more readily available, for example gaming guides, troubleshooting advice, or answers that are usually buried inside massive community servers, which otherwise require Discord to access.

However, having your conversations suddenly become searchable across the internet introduces some uncomfortable privacy questions.

Here’s how to keep your messages off Google

If you’d rather keep your conversations within Discord, the platform has introduced a new privacy control. On the desktop app or web version, head to User Settings > Data & Privacy and disable Show my message content from Discoverable channels on web pages.

This single toggle applies across every Discoverable Server you’re part of, including when using Discord on mobile. So switching it off only protects messages sent while the setting is disabled. Previously eligible messages can remain visible unless you delete them, and search engines may retain cached copies even after deletion.

Server administrators can separately disable Channel Messages and Channel Summaries under Server Settings > Community > Web Presence. Individual users cannot opt out of the automated summaries through their personal message setting. Discord is keeping the feature disabled by default in the EU/EEA, UK, Canada, Brazil, Australia, and South Korea, meanwhile, teen accounts are excluded entirely.

finger pointing at x logo

You just opened X and started typing your thoughts. Imagine the jump scare when a hand suddenly pops up on your screen, pointing at the promote button. It doesn’t say a word and simply points. For a growing number of X users, this isn’t a made-up scenario but something they have been seeing since yesterday, and very few of them are amused.

Most of us have learned to tune out the usual in-app upsells, whether it’s a glowing upgrade banner or a pop-up about a premium plan. A floating hand hovering over your draft is much harder to ignore, and that’s probably the whole point.
