WhatsApp’s new photo-sharing shortcut is convenient, but I’m not entirely convinced

Sharing media on WhatsApp isn’t too complicated. All you need are a few taps and you’re good to go. But when you just took a screenshot and quickly want to share it with someone, the process gets a little tedious. You have to open the gallery and find it again. It is a minor inconvenience that adds up over time.

So WhatsApp new change could be a great quality-of-life update. The messaging app might be rolling out a new feature called Recent media suggestions, which automatically brings your latest photos and videos into the chat interface, allowing you to share them without opening the gallery. According to WABetaInfo, the feature is gradually reaching Android and iOS users with the latest versions of WhatsApp. But I’m not sure if this is the best implementation.

WhatsApp needs to know what you just saved

The feature currently has two different implementations. For some users, WhatsApp displays a small pop-up above the message bar when they open a conversation, complete with a thumbnail of the latest media saved to their gallery. Meanwhile, others will see the camera icon in the chat bar temporarily replaced with a thumbnail of that photo or video. Either way, tapping the suggestion opens WhatsApp’s media editor, where users can review the file, add captions or stickers, and decide whether to send it.

Recommended Videos

WhatsApp doesn’t distinguish between different types of media. So it might suggest photos you just captured, a screenshot, an image downloaded from the internet, or even a video saved from another app. Again, I can see how it might be helpful to get a quick access option to sharing an image you just captured or saved.

However, there’s also the possibility of WhatsApp surfacing something you’d rather keep to yourself, especially since the feature simply picks the most recently saved file. Fortunately, tapping the suggestion doesn’t send anything automatically. You’ll still have to confirm the action, and you can dismiss the suggestion entirely.

Not interested? Here’s how to turn it off

WhatsApp is enabling Recent media suggestions automatically for eligible users, so you might encounter the feature without manually switching anything on. If you’d rather keep your camera roll out of sight, head to Settings > Chats > Recent media suggestions and disable the toggle.

The feature is currently rolling out gradually to users on both Android and iOS, so it may take a few weeks before it appears on your device. WhatsApp hasn’t announced a specific date for its wider availability. It’s a small quality-of-life improvement, especially for people who regularly share photos and screenshots.

The privacy issue is obvious, so here's how to stop it
Discord on PC Featured

Discord is trying to push more visibility on the internet for some of its biggest communities, and there's a good chance your messages could end up in a Google Search. The platform is preparing to make conversations from certain public servers searchable on the web, so there's a privacy setting you might want to check before the rollout begins.

According to Discord's official announcement, the changes will roll out in two stages. Starting November 16, qualifying servers will have public web pages featuring automated summaries of conversations. By mid-December, individual messages from eligible public channels could also appear word-for-word in Google and other search engines.

X has a creepy new way to make you promote your posts, and nobody asked for it
A mysterious pointing hand is haunting X drafts, and users are not amused.
finger pointing at x logo

You just opened X and started typing your thoughts. Imagine the jump scare when a hand suddenly pops up on your screen, pointing at the promote button. It doesn’t say a word and simply points. For a growing number of X users, this isn’t a made-up scenario but something they have been seeing since yesterday, and very few of them are amused.

Most of us have learned to tune out the usual in-app upsells, whether it’s a glowing upgrade banner or a pop-up about a premium plan. A floating hand hovering over your draft is much harder to ignore, and that’s probably the whole point.
