This calm-looking galaxy was the site of two epic supernovas

A new image released this week shows the spiral galaxy NGC 5643 as captured by the Hubble Space Telescope. The galaxy, located in the constellation of Lupus, is around 60 million light-years away and is around twice the width of the Milky Way, at 100,000 light-years across.

To capture such a large galaxy from a great distance, Hubble had to take a number of exposures to make sure the image was crisp and highly detailed. These 30 different exposures were taken over nine hours and combined to create this stunning image.

This particular galaxy is notable for being the site of two supernovas, one spotted in 2013 and one in 2017. The 2013 supernova was spotted by an amateur astronomer from New Zealand named Stuart Parker as part of the Backyard Observatory Supernova Search (BOSS) project, in which a small group of astronomers from Australia and New Zealand collaborate to search out objects in the southern sky. Parker and his friends have discovered a large number of supernovas and are continuing to search the sky, with their most recent finding occurring earlier this year.

The supernova spotted in 2017 was discovered using the Carnegie Institution for Science’s Carnegie Institution for Science at the Las Campanas Observatory, located in the Chilean desert.

Both the 2013 supernova and the 2017 supernova were Type 1a supernovas, in which a low-mass star undergoes a thermonuclear explosion. Normally, supernovas only occur in higher-mass stars, but low-mass stars can also go supernova when they are part of a binary system. This is where the low-mass star, a white dwarf, has a companion star, with the two orbiting each other. The white dwarf can siphon off mass from its companion, eventually gaining so much mass that it explodes in an extremely bright supernova event which lights up its part of the galaxy.

Hubble spots a bright galaxy peering out from behind a dark nebula
The subject of this image taken with the NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope is the spiral galaxy IC 4633, located 100 million light-years away from us in the constellation Apus. IC 4633 is a galaxy rich in star-forming activity and also hosts an active galactic nucleus at its core. From our point of view, the galaxy is tilted mostly towards us, giving astronomers a fairly good view of its billions of stars.

A new image from the Hubble Space Telescope shows a galaxy partly hidden by a huge cloud of dust known as a dark nebula. The galaxy IC 4633 still shines brightly and beautifully in the main part of the image, but to the bottom right, you can see dark smudges of dust that are blocking the light from this part of the galaxy.

Taken using Hubble's Advanced Camera for Surveys (ACS) instrument, the image also incorporates data from the DECam instrument on the Víctor M. Blanco 4-meter Telescope, which is located in Chile. By bringing together data from the space-based Hubble and the ground-based DECam, astronomers can get a better look at this galaxy, located 100 million light-years away, and the dark dust partially obscuring it.

See the stunning Vela supernova remnant in exquisite detail in expansive image
This colorful web of wispy gas filaments is the Vela Supernova Remnant, an expanding nebula of cosmic debris left over from a massive star that exploded about 11,000 years ago. This image was taken with the Department of Energy-fabricated Dark Energy Camera (DECam), mounted on the US National Science Foundation's Víctor M. Blanco 4-meter Telescope at Cerro Tololo Inter-American Observatory in Chile, a Program of NSF’s NOIRLab. The striking reds, yellows, and blues in this image were achieved through the use of three DECam filters that each collect a specific color of light. Separate images were taken in each filter and then stacked on top of each other to produce this high-resolution image that contains 1.3 gigapixels and showcases the intricate web-like filaments snaking throughout the expanding cloud of gas.

A new image of the ghostly Vela supernova remnant shows off the fascinating and elaborate structure of this striking cosmic object. Taken using the Dark Energy Camera (DECam), this enormous image is 1.3 gigapixels, making it DECam's largest image to date.
