It looks like ZTE wants to broaden its horizons a little. In an interview with CNET, Lixin Cheng, ZTE USA CEO, mentioned that the company is in the final stages of developing an Android Wear device — and it even has a carrier lined up in the U.S.

So why would the company need a carrier for the watch? Well, when it launches later this year, it will be one of the few that has its own LTE connection, and it will be able to run completely independently of your smartphone.

ZTE is making a big move in releasing a smartwatch with Android Wear. While not a bad operating system, Android Wear smartwatches really haven’t caught on as much as the likes of Google probably would have wanted. Instead of opting for smartwatches, many have chosen to go with cheaper and simpler activity trackers. Still, according to the interview, ZTE thinks that Android Wear is more or less ready for prime time.

In fact, ZTE thinks that the next wave of Android Wear devices is really going to push the concept of the Android Wear smartwatch into consumer consciousness. That’s because the next wave of devices will feature better battery life, an LTE connection, and proper carrier support.

It’s not yet known which version of Android Wear the new watch will support — Google is expected to launch Android Wear 2.0 in the coming months after quite a few months of delay. It’s possible that the ZTE watch could be one of the first to feature Android Wear 2.0, along with Google’s own smartwatches, which are being built by HTC.

It will certainly be interesting to see what a ZTE smartwatch ends up looking like, and if it’s truly able to be a part of a new wave of Android Wear smartwatches.

Is the Google Pixel Watch waterproof? Read this before getting it wet
Someone using a Google Pixel Watch for measure activities.

There's a new smartwatch on the scene, and it comes to you courtesy of Google, the company that brings you the flagship Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro smartphones. Designed as a direct competitor to the Apple Watch and Samsung Galaxy Watch, the Google Pixel Watch, a new member of the Pixel family, includes numerous health and safety features running on the Wear OS 3.2 platform.

The round-faced Google Pixel is constructed from recycled stainless steel and Corning Gorilla Glass. Its traditional design is reminiscent of classic watches and includes a tactile crown. The device is designed to record information about your health via heart rate tracking, sleep tracking, and assorted workout modes, while an ECG app lets you assess your heart rhythm for AFib. It employs Fitbit’s activity tracking to record stats and monitor your progress.

Android 12L and Wear OS 3 show Google still isn’t serious about tablets and smartwatches
Onn Android Tablet on Table

Late last year, Google introduced Android 12L, its operating system optimized specifically for tablets and foldables. After years of neglect, Google showed it was finally taking the form factor seriously. The same went for Wear OS 3, with Google breathing new life into smartwatches. There's just one problem for both.

As of the time of writing, not one tablet, foldable, or smartwatch has been updated to either of these operating systems. Google has planned to overhaul how its smartwatch and tablet platforms work for the better, but the company's rollout has undermined its ambitious plans.

The Moto Watch 100 might skip out on Google’s Wear OS entirely for a custom OS
moto watch 100 wear os no motorola leak 2

A new Motorola-branded smartwatch, the Moto Watch 100, has been in the works for months now, with the chip shortage being a major factor in its delay. Now, the wearable is on the cusp of launch -- and a new leak from Evan Blass (@evleaks on Twitter) says it may not be running Google's Wear OS as expected.

The Moto Watch 100 is a cheap Motorola-branded watch by CE Brands that's had some of its specifications leak earlier. As far as hardware goes, it will be quite standard, should the rumors pan out. It'll be a light watch at 29 grams, with a 355mAh battery and support for Bluetooth 5.0. All the old familiar sensors, from accelerometers to gyroscopes, are there, and it'll be a fitness-focused watch. What is interesting about this watch is the alleged choice of operating system. Rather than adopting Google's Wear OS as expected, the Motorola Watch 100 will, according to Blass, run an all-new Moto Watch OS.
